The Assembly Group worked on sewing together a large quilt out of the blueprints made at the Sun Print Saturday events, which took place outside the new Sue Ross Arts Center. Children and parents learned how to create cyanotypes under the guidance of Symposium students. Each participant made two cyanotype prints, one to take home and one that you can see sewn into this artwork, titled Community Blueprint. Once the prints made at the event were given to the Assembly Group, larger cyanotypes were created for additional material and to vary the scale of the included prints. These larger prints helped tie together the pieces made by the children to make the collaborative piece look cohesive. White strips of fabric were used to separate the different categories of the cyanotypes and to make the white in the individual prints pop. In order to accomplish all of this, the Assembly Group split up into smaller groups and partnerships. They would work together to measure the pieces and make sure they were cut straight. Then the fabric would be pinned together, sewn on a sewing machine, and slowly pieced together into the correct patterns in the right order.

The group will have Community Blueprint on display at the Sue Ross Art Center, which is located near downtown Kirksville, from November 7th through December 29th, 2020. Kirksville residents who may have participated in some of the projects will be able to see how the whole project came together. Its display will be a way for the community to see what the Truman Create class has accomplished and help to beautify the town. The Assembly Group’s finished piece is a result of the many collaborations mentioned above. It serves as a physical representation of Truman’s commitment to connect with and better the local community. Our hope is that this artwork will help foster an interest in the arts and inspire a community that continues to seek out creative outlets for bettering themselves and their surroundings.
